Tame That Mane, Celeb Style!
Our guest writer today is Bill Murphy of William David Salon, offering his tips for curly hair. Read on!
While curls can really liven up a ‘do, they’re often hard to manage. And as any girl blessed with naturally curly hair knows, finding how to tame that mane can be a challenge. In my 20 years as a hairstylist, I’ve seen it all: fried-to-the-root hair; frizz beyond measure; and straw-like coifs that are in dire need of conditioning. But take heart; I have the answers!
Often curly hair is dried out from over-styling. To get that moisture back, start with a hydrating shampoo & conditioner. I recommend products by Davines. The organic hair care line goes easy on your curls and revives it with natural ingredients, leaving it gorgeous à la celebs Vanessa Hudgens, Keri Russell and Debra Messing:
- Lock it in: Davine’s Melu shampoo and conditioner work great to protect long, dry, damaged hair. Specifically, they help to fill in the rough spots in the hair shaft and help eliminate frizz.
- Green and clean: Since Davines products are organic, they don’t deposit coatings on top of the hair, but instead infuse moisture back into the dry hair shaft.
- Getting technical: In fact, under a microscope, the texture of curly hair is much rougher than straight hair. So special products like Davines can be used to smooth out the roughness of the hair.
In addition to prepping curly hair with in-shower defenses, wavy-haired mavens can further protect their ‘dos after getting clean – and before taking it to the blow-dryer. Curly hair is often dehydrated. And since it has a rougher texture, it’s important to use additional moisturizing products. For example, leave-in conditioners are extremely beneficial. Almost any way of drying hair (besides possibly air-drying) is going to take moisture out of hair, thus increasing the importance of moisturizing:
- Taste of Morocco: Je Veux products contain 7% Argan oil. Argan is a nut from Morocco that contains fatty acids and lipids that will replenish the hair’s moisture. The oil doesn’t coat the hair, but deposits into it. I especially love that while it’s extremely effective, it’s not heavy and won’t weigh the hair down. Just put it into damp hair after using a leave-in conditioner.
- Just relax: Davines also carries a relaxing cream that can be used by those who want to control curl and eliminate the frizz – and not straighten their hair.
- Curls galore: Davines’ Momo cream provides another way to build up and stand out. This curl-enhancing balm helps close down cuticles in the hair to make curls pop more.

After prepping and moisturizing the hair, curly tops can set their styles with several finishing products:
- Wear & repair: Davines’ Melu is a repairing serum, good for any hair type and a great way to finish the hair.
- Polish it off: The Defining Gloss Finishing Spray/No Hold & Extra High Shine adds nice shine to hair, whether curly or straight.
Those looking for a long-term way to eliminate curls can check out Keratin treatments.
But I say embrace the curl; with the right tools, the right products and a little patience, perfectly coiffed curls are at your fingertips!
