Hoodia - Hunger Supressing
Plant
What is Hoodia?
Hoodia is a cactus-like plant that only grows wild in the Kalahari
Desert of the South Africa region. There it has been used by the indigenous
people for thousands of years to ward off hunger and thirst during
long hunting trips and times of famine. There are about 15 species
of the hoodia plant, but only hoodia gordonii has been shown to suppress
appetite. The plant and its appetite suppressing effect has only recently
been discovered and tested in the west. It gained a lot popularity
and recognition following a report on CBS where a reporter traveled
to South Africa and ate the hoodia claiming that it completely took
away their hunger with no side effects. Since then there have been
a variety of experiments to test the effectiveness of the plant. In
a dietary test there was a reported average calorie intake reduction
of 1,000 calories a day. Hoodia is widely available in different forms
including: capsules, liquid, powder and tea. Pros:
Hoodia is all natural and works to simply make you feel full. In
its pure forms there are no stimulants like with many other diet
pills that result in jittery and heart-racing side effects. In addition,
taking hoodia has resulted in weight loss when no exercise was done.
Because hoodia makes you feel full when you have eaten very little,
you are able to consume significantly fewer calories. It is a fact
that the only way to lose weight is to either burn more calories
than you consume in a day or, simply eat fewer calories than you
burn throughout the day. Hoodia can help you can lose weight without
even having to do a strenuous work out and you will have reduced
hunger cravings.
Cons:
One con to taking hoodia is finding a legitimate hoodia product.
It has been reported that up to 80% of hoodia products that are
available today are counterfeit. Many contain only 100mg or less
of hoodia and you really need to have a dosage of 1,000mg to get
the effects. Also, to get the full benefits of hoodia it needs to
be taken about 3 times a day before meals, so it requires you to
be dedicated to remembering to take it.
Things to Consider:
It is important to understand that hoodia is not magic; while it
does take away your appetite it will not change your behavior and
eating habits. Many people who are overweight eat not solely out
of hunger but because of other reasons such as boredom or as a way
to deal with stress. When begin taking hoodia it may be wise to
contemplate what behaviors may need to be changed in relation to
food. Also, you should not just take hoodia and think you can just
not eat and starve to lose weight. That is not healthy. The best
way to use hoodia is to help you eat less but still eat nutritious
food. The great thing about hoodia is that it will allow you to
consume less without feeling hungry or deprived of food. One last
caution, hoodia may also suppress thirst so be sure to still drink
water throughout the day.
