Food and Your Skin

head shot of Susan PerryWe all want flawless, glowing skin. But how can we achieve it? One way is to be conscious about what we consume because the foods we eat can affect our skin’s health. Read on to find out what makes your skin retreat for help, and what makes it radiant.

What your skin hates:
Your skin hates sugar and foods that convert rapidly to sugar in your bloodstream causing inflammation and damage to skin cells, the culprit of many skin diseases. These are foods high on the glycemic index – breads, candy, cookies, cereals (except oatmeal), dried fruits, sodas and starchy vegetables. The sugars lead to glycation which is cross linking of collagen fibers making them stiff instead of elastic. Cells malfunction and the skin looks wrinkled and discolored. This is much the same process as what occurs when food is stored too long in the refrigerator – glycation causes it to darken and harden.

What your skin loves:
Your skin loves water and lots of it; it is the elixir of life, drink lots of it. Your skin loves a Mediterranean diet that is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids – salmon and olive oil. Foods low on the glycemic index and are packed with essential nutrients and antioxidants, such as fresh organic fruits, vegetables and yogurt. Eat 8 portions of fruit and vegetables per day and a high protein source and your skin will glow.

The good news:
Most of us really do know what is bad for our health. I don’t think anyone really believes ice cream, soda and cake is good for our skin or our waistline or our hearts. It is simple to identify the bad stuff.
Just think about sugar = high glycemic index = bad = glycation = wrinkles.
Follow these tips and keep your skin clear and healthy all year long!
