Finding Your Inner Beauty: A Story

A young girl came home angry that she had been embarrassed by a bully at her school that afternoon. Seeing her granddaughter distraught, she sat her granddaughter down and said, “I have a very powerful story to tell you so I want you to listen closely”.

The grandmother shared that there have been many hateful, angry, mean bullies within her life. She shared how she too had spent many hours of her life feeling anger and even hate for the bullies and what they had done to her. Until one day a wise soul sat her down and stated, “Remaining angry at bullies is like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die. While you have a right to have the feelings you have, it is important to work through them and not allow them to take away your energy and love of life.

Since then, I have learned ways to deal with bullies. Although, I still struggle with the biggest bully of them all.”

“Who is that?” asked the granddaughter. “Me. I have always felt like I have two voices inside me. One is the voice of my inner power. She is the voice of joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. She lives in harmony with everything around her. The other voice is my bully. She bullies me more than anyone ever has. She is filled with anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies and false pride. The littlest thing will set her into a fit of temper. She fights everyone, all the time, for no reason. Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two powerful voices inside me as they both try to rule my life.

It is important for you to understand that this fight is not only occurring within me, is going on inside you and inside every other person.”

The girl looked intently into her grandmother’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, grandmother?”

The grandmothers smiled and quietly said, “The one I give my energy and attention”.
