Eating Slower To Eat Less
Numerous studies show that when we eat meals slowly and thoroughly chew food we are able to more fully enjoy our meals and actually consume fewer calories. The reason behind this is that it takes about 20 minutes on average for your body to realize that it is full.
So, if you gobble up your whole meal in just a few minutes, you will still be feeling hungry and may grab for something extra to eat to get that satisfied feeling. But if you were to take your time and chew your food a little more your body will have time to realize it’s full and send that signal for you to stop eating.
Here are a couple tips to help you eat slower:
- Take smaller bites
- Chew each bite 20-30 times
- Physically set down your fork or spoon between every bite
- If you still feel hungry after following these tips try drinking a glass of water and give your body a few more minutes to give you the satisfied feeling.
Also, the benefit of eating slower is not just consuming less calories. By eating at a more leisurely pace you are able to actually enjoy your food, savoring the flavors and aromas. This will also contribute to decreased stress levels because by slowing down for meal times you allow yourself to take a break from daily stresses.
And finally, you may experience improved digestion from chewing your food better which makes less work for your stomach and other digestive organs.
